Umanami (ウマナミ) is a dark elf student from the elven world. She lives with her mother at her dormitory, together with Yuri, Mara and Tansho. She’s one year younger than the three aforementioned students, and attends the same school that they do.
Appearance
Umanami has white hair that reaches her lower back, she lets it flow freely, and her eyes are yellow. She has dark skin and a 100 cm bust, which is an L-cup in Japanese bra size. In school she wears a sailor uniform, and in her free time is seen to like dressing in gothic Lolita fashion.
Personality
She’s a very blunt young lady who’s a year younger than Yuri. She often fails to consider other people's emotions, either because she can’t read the room, or simply prioritises her mother’s and her own wishes above others. Her cat-like eyes suggest she’s somewhat predatory, or at least this is how Yuri sees it. In actuality she’s just a difficult communicator.
For Umanami, family is the most important aspect of her life. This can be seen via how she treats her friends, her mother, and most importantly, Yuri. She’s competitive when it comes to Yuri, to the point of trying to monopolise Yuri away from her friends, and boasts and exaggerates matters that she feels happy or prideful about, such as announcing when she or her mother gets closer with Yuri, or proclaiming Funou’s charms.
She’s started to calm down as her emotions for Yuri are now weighing down on her decisions. Her emotions are often hard to read, and she can be described as passive-aggressive and bullheaded. One of her persistent traits is how she calls Yuri for Yuri-mama in order to integrate her into her family.
History
Her childhood is unknown, only that one of her parents passed away, leaving Funou to raise her. On her first school day, she talks to Yuri about what type of relationship she has with her mama, and that if she makes her sad, she will hurt Yuri. She’s Yuri kouhai, so interacts very little with her. Winter arrives, and together with Funou, they visit a local hot spring, where they stumble into Yuri, Mara and Tansho. While they soak, a conversation about who the best elf is begins, not wanting to be left out she starts to promote herself and her mother, to Funou’s embarrassment. Yuri doesn’t give them an answer and proclaims: “Th-this bath is over! Let's go home!!”1
Over time her emotions grow for Yuri, and one day asks her to visit the Elf Ocean with Funou. While there she figures out that Yuri and AV-san have history, as well as more about her mother’s feelings for Yuri. On New Year’s Eve, she catches her mother and Yuri getting closer, giving her a knowing look before leaving them alone. The next day she visits a shop with Yuri and confronts her about the prior day's event. When Umanami figures out that she’s been way too pushy with Yuri, she gets sad and almost starts to cry in front of Yuri herself. Yuri comforts her and they make up the rift between them.
Relationships
Yuri
Initially she thought Yuri was a good person, since her mother had accepted her. She thought that Yuri would become a part of her family since she thought that Funou-mama was going to become an item with Yuri, which is the reason that Umanami started calling Yuri for Yuri-mama. Even with this apparent willingness to see her as a family member, Umanami decided to give Yuri a short leash by threatening her if she’d ever harm her mother.
She takes an interest in Yuri’s opinions, as seen during the hot spring visit where she started a competitive situation with the other elves over who Yuri likes the most. While Yuri’s opinions are of interest to her, she has a hard time reading emotions, so often misreads the room and thinks Yuri is more eager than she actually is. Her mission of coupling Yuri with her mother also ignites her own feelings is Yuri, and she quickly falls in love with Yuri, even if she sees her emotions as simply a part of the plan, since she’s willing to put herself in a relationship with Yuri, if it means that Yuri will become an item with her mother.
Umanami gets a reality check when she goes shopping with Yuri after New Year’s Eve, where she figures out that she’s been way too pushy and has been hurting her relationship with Yuri. Yuri, being unable to be angry at Umanami forgives her and opens up to her in a way she hadn’t foreseen as they become lovers during shopping.
Mara
Mara first comes across to Umanami as chaoting and quick to draw the wrong conclusion. When not fighting over Yuri, Mara and Umanami seem to have a laid back relationship to one another, as senpai and kohai.
When fighting over Yuri they both get competitive with one another. Umanami brags to Mara about how far she’s gotten in her relationship with Yuri when Yuri isn’t around, and was seen glancing at Mara during their hot spring visit, possibly showing that she’s jealous of their close bond with one another.
Tansho
Their first interaction with one another was at the hot spring, but it can be assumed that Umanami has been seen and been introduced to her before, since Tansho lives at the same dormitory as she does. Umanami tries to show off her assets during their visit to the hot spring, and even comments that Tansho is an outsider in her eyes, in the context of the situation. When Yuri isn’t involved they both seem to be on good terms with one another.
Funou
Umanami deeply cares for her mother, willing to go above and beyond to make sure that she doesn’t get hurt in any way. They seem to have a deep mother daughter bond with one another, as neither seem faced by the other. An example of this is their apparent openness to bath together at the hot spring. Umanami simply sees Funou’s emotions and actions as just another part of her family dynamic and not something she should criticise.
The introduction of Yuri clearly made Umanami more sporadic, as she’s willing to show herself and her mother off in front of Yuri, in a way her own mother Funou probably would never have imagined. She can even be seen in an angry state whenever she thinks that Yuri might be ‘cheating’ on her mother with the other elves.
AV
Umanami's relationship with AV-san is very thin, while they do seem to have history, Umanami has yet to be seen talking enough with AV-san for a thorough relationship explanation to be created. They’re seen talking like adults on the beach, where AV-san seems familiar enough with Umanami to understand that Umanami has a tendency to exaggerate her mother a bit.
